Leaving A Legacy of Victory

April 2, 2015

Judges 16:30  Samson said, “Let me die with the Philistines!” Then he pushed with all his might, and down came the temple on the rulers and all the people in it. Thus he killed many more when he died than while he lived.

My efforts and my accomplishments for God, and the influence I have in my community, probably pales in comparison to the works and endeavors of others around the world. I may have fewer talents, and I may not be motivated as much as over-achievers and 10-talent people, but that doesn’t mean God isn’t using me. I may actually die believing that I really did little to help establish the Kingdom of God in Anacortes. But none of that matters, because it simply isn’t about me. It’s all about Him. Yes, leaving a legacy is important to me, but by virtue of the fact that this sentence includes a reference to “me,” it becomes apparent that my pride is running its number right now. I want to accomplish things for God. I desire to leave this world knowing I made it a better place. But ultimately, and in the end of all things, I become most influential for the Kingdom, when “self” dies. When I die to self-interest, and my own wants and needs become minimized so that God can be glorified, only then do I begin to enter the realm of leaving a legacy. With Samson’s last act on earth, he left a pile of rubble and a cloud of dust behind when he departed earth, but in the Kingdom of God, a monumental victory had been accomplished. God avenged his people Israel, when Samson aligned his actions with the purposes of Heaven. Yes, he had to die. But that’s the point. My willingness to die to my own wants and desires, places me in a position of accomplishing two desires in my heart. First, I glorify God when I lay down self, that He may be lifted higher. Second, I position myself in a place where the future is impacted far more positively for God and his plans, thereby leaving a legacy of blessing and influence, for those that follow me. This can only happen when I choose to obey God and surrender to self. This is how Samson left a legacy. This is the only way I can leave a legacy. Death to self leads to a legacy of victory.

Thank you Father! Help me to continually lay down my rights, that you will be lifted higher.
